How Does Alcohol Effects Mental Health

Alcohol can have a major impact on your mental health. Because alcohol is a depressant, it slows your body down and changes the chemical makeup in your brain, thereby, altering your mood, energy levels, sleeping patterns, concentration, and memory.

Alcohol also impacts decision making and reduces inhibitions which can lead to you making decisions while drinking that you would not normally make when you are sober. In addition to increasing risky behavior, alcohol use can increase aggression, suicidal thoughts, and sexual aggressive actions.  Heavy use of alcohol can impact your ability to cope with difficult times and it can severely impact your mood in a negative way.

However, if you decide to reduce the amount of alcohol you consume or stop completely, the benefits include more energy, better sleep, better physical health, improvement of mood, and you can even save money.  Take care of your mental health and it will take care of you.
